Alex Cameron + Angel Olsen + Girls’, Jemima Kirke

When I saw these three names appear together in one email, I immediately stopped what I was doing. Who wouldn’t want a music video directed by and starring the lovely Jemima Kirke, set to the tune of the one and only, Alex Cameron and featuring siren songstress, Angel Olsen? The video not only features Cameron’s exceptionally eccentric dance moves but Kirke’s interpretation as well. Cameron’s lyrics, gyrations, and overall musical intellect is bizarre, undoubtedly from another time and so inexplicably delicious.

Cameron’s upcoming record, Forced Witness, is out September 8th via Secretly Canadian.

YouTube Playlist: Sites and Sounds of 2017

I’ll be honest, the first video on this playlist (“Man’s Man” by SWIMM….whom I’ve covered extensively on MFL and is playing in Provo, UT February 18th if you’re near) is from 2016…but everything else is fresh 2017 goodness!

Music Video Playlist: Sites and Sounds of Fall

Since I can’t include all of the wonderful music o that sits in my inbox in my Soundcloud playlits, I have created playlists on YouTube. I highly recommend you take a moment now and then to check out the music videos and let your eyes AND ears enjoy what’s happening.

New album to come September 2nd from Angel Olsen: “MY WOMAN”

Following the release of her last record in 2014, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, comes Angel Olsen’s latest project, MY WOMAN, due out September 2nd on Jagjaguwar. On this new record, Olsen still intoxicates her listeners with her longing vocals, sense of rock and grunge and her simultaneous understanding of soft, reflective songwriting. The album is organized with the A side tracks more themed to the upfront, pop n’ rock we know her so well for and the B side is decorated with longer, more stretched out tracks, indicative of her softer side. Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Santigold) produced MY WOMAN and it features guest artist Seth Kauffman on guitar in addition to Olsen’s guitarist Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Joshua Jaeger.

Before releasing her latest single and music video, “Shut Up Kiss Me”, Olsen released a teaser trailer for the track, “Intern”:

The first single to come from MY WOMAN is “Shut Up Kiss Me”, a more in-your-face track in comparison to “Intern”, thus it lies on the A side of the record. Again Olsen is outfitted with the shiny silver bob that was featured in the trailer for “Intern”, perhaps a theme for MY WOMAN. The goofy video features nothing short of some serious attitude but also a bit of playfulness from Olsen. She shakes her silver do around whilst roller skating down the street in the night hours, and alone, plus or minus some equally as silly young people, at a roller rink. The youthfullness is infectious as is her demanding voice.

“Bored Today”: music video from Lionlimb

Just the right chord progression, fleeting, doesn’t drag on. “Bored Today” by Lionlimb is an expertly crafted boring track. I’m not talking bad boring. The song is called “Bored Today” and they encapsulate that lazy, dallying feeling that only one can experience on a personal level. Droopy eyes, slow thoughts, what better to do than jam with friends when you’re “bored today.”

Lionlimb will be supporting the incredible Angel Olsen for a tour this fall. In fact, they will be stopping in my home town, Missoula, MT. Not sure if I can cope with missing this!

“Surrender”, a taste from Briana Marela’s upcoming album.

Powerful, echoing, cavernous, subtle, complex…It’s difficult to describe Briana Marela’s sound in a way that fully represents and covers her style. Briana Marela is a native of Washington state and a natural music-maker, writing melodies before she even touched an instrument.

The first single, “Surrender”, off of her sophomore album, ‘All Around Us’, was released yesterday. If it is any indication of what is to come and with a master of a team behind her, including Alex Somers who produces for Sigur Rós and the Icelandic group, Amiina on strings, it is going to be a wonder of a record:

You can pre-order “All Around Us” on iTunes now and the album will be released in its entirety August 21st on Jagjaguwar. Keep in mind, this is the same label that brought us Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten, both featured in my girl power post from a few months ago.
